Anime Recommendations for Those New to the Genre

Anime started as a niche interest that most people considered “nerdy” and only recently evolved into something mainstream. However, for anyone who grew up watching anime, it has always been a significant part of their lives. Now, this list isn't about the BEST anime. It's for those who are looking to transition from Western TV show/Movie genres to anime. With that in mind, here are some anime recommendations for beginners. They're perfect for those seeking compelling storytelling, fun viewing experiences, or action-packed entertainment.(shonen)

Save it.

  1. Attack on Titan: Yes- we are going to start with one of the best written anime ever. This action-packed series follows humanity's struggle against giant humanoid creatures known as Titans. It's filled with intense battles, incredible world-building, and a gripping storyline.
  1. MegaloBox: An underrated gem, MegaloBox is a must-watch. The series pays homage to the classic anime series Ashita no Joe, yet it brings a new and refreshing perspective to the boxing genre. Its story of an underdog's rise to fame is both inspiring and exciting, making it a solid choice for anime newcomers.
  1. Castlevania: From an iconic video game series to the home screen, Castlevania is a beautiful anime that breathes life into the beloved characters we all know and love. Even if you are unfamiliar with the tale of the Belmonts, this show is one riddled with gorgeous gothic imagery, dark and riveting storytelling, and heartwarming character development all in one. Plus, who doesn’t love hot vampires?
  1. Jujutsu Kaisen: Even though this is one of the newer anime series released on this list, Jujutsu Kaisen will most likely earn its title for one of the best anime ever. With its rich storytelling, compelling world-building through characters and stunning artwork and animation to match this series has captured the attention and hearts of watchers worldwide. (As a bonus: if you end up liking Jujutsu Kaisen, then you just might like Mob Psycho 100. It takes a much lighter spin on the genre but certainly keeps up in terms of character development and fight sequences.)
  1. Cowboy Bebop(Samurai Champloo & Afro Samurai): It would be rude to not include an anime classic that’s both captivating and influential. Known for popularizing anime in the West, it has mature writing and dialogue, and is "episodic" allowing most episodes to be their own self-contained story. Plus, the soundtrack is one that will most likely find its way to your playlist after one viewing! The same goes for gems like Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai- they have made their marks on our culture as a whole so if you want something more down-to-earth and heart wrenching to watch, these are your picks.
  1. Kuroko’s Basketball: Also known as Kurko no Basuke, this popular sports-based anime series focuses on the sport of basketball, featuring the main character, Tetsuya Kuroko. It's filled with life lessons about the importance of friendship, the value of teamwork, and the spirit of competition. If you’re into sports and love rooting for the up and comer, definitely put this on your list!
  1. Parasyte: If you like a show that is gritty, psychological, and dark, this might be one to consider. Parasyte is a unique and thrilling anime series where the protagonist, Shinichi Izumi, navigates life after his right hand becomes possessed by an alien Parasite.
  1. Vinland Saga: - If you love great pacing and storytelling, Vinland Saga is another anime you just have to watch. Vinland Saga follows the tale of young Thorfinn entering the cruel world of Vikings of the past. The fight choreography will keep you on the edge of your seat. This in conjunction with the great depth we see in the relationships between the characters, as well as their own individual growth, is enough to earn a rightful spot on this list of recommendations for sure!
  1. DevilMan Cry Baby: -, As a reboot of the original Devilman manga released in 1972, this anime series is a dark, yet captivating journey of a young man who becomes a demon to fight evil forces. It is considered a horror series so definitely keep that in mind when entering into this. If action, graphic visuals, and gore are up your alley, this is one of the best shows that will stick with you well after you’ve watched it.
