When it comes to anime, certain characters tend to elicit strong emotions—whether it’s love or hate. These characters often play pivotal roles in their respective stories but, for various reasons, end up becoming universally despised by fans. Whether it’s due to their actions, attitudes, or sometimes just bad luck with writing, here are 10 of the most hated anime characters of all time.

1. Sakura Haruno (Naruto)

Sakura is infamous for her unrequited obsession with Sasuke and her often harsh treatment of Naruto. Fans have criticized her for being overly emotional, self-centered, and not living up to her potential as a ninja until much later in the series. While she does experience character growth, the damage was done early on.

2. Shou Tucker (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Shou Tucker is the epitome of evil in the eyes of anime fans. His horrifying experiment with his daughter and their family dog in his quest for scientific success is one of the most disturbing moments in anime history. His heartless actions have made him a universally despised figure.

3. Mineta Minoru (My Hero Academia)

Mineta’s perverted behavior, especially toward his female classmates, has earned him a spot on many anime fans’ most-hated lists. His attempts at comedy often fall flat, and his creepy personality tends to overshadow his rare moments of bravery.

4. Makoto Itou (School Days)

Makoto starts off as a regular high school boy, but his endless cheating and manipulation of the girls around him turn him into a loathed character by the end of School Days. The way he treats both Kotonoha and Sekai has left fans furious, making him one of anime’s most despised protagonists.

5. Gabi Braun (Attack on Titan)

Gabi’s introduction in Attack on Titan sparked immediate hatred among fans. Her role in a tragic event involving a fan-favorite character, combined with her blind patriotism and stubbornness, led to a significant portion of the fandom disliking her from the start.

6. Danzo Shimura (Naruto)

Danzo is responsible for some of the worst decisions and betrayals in the Naruto universe, including orchestrating massacres, manipulating people for his own gain, and generally being a power-hungry antagonist. His actions, particularly his involvement with the Uchiha Clan’s downfall, have made him an easy target for hate.

7. Seryu Ubiquitous (Akame ga Kill!)

Seryu is a twisted, justice-obsessed character who takes pleasure in causing pain to others under the guise of righteousness. Her fanatical devotion to her sense of justice, combined with her violent and unhinged nature, has made her one of the most despised characters in Akame ga Kill!

8. Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Shinji is one of the most controversial anime protagonists. While some empathize with his internal struggles, many viewers grew frustrated with his constant indecisiveness, self-loathing, and reluctance to take action when needed. His negative mindset has been polarizing, causing many to dislike him.

9. Nina Einstein (Code Geass)

Nina’s extreme xenophobia, her obsession with Euphemia, and her increasingly unhinged actions make her a difficult character to root for in Code Geass. As the series progresses, her erratic behavior and narrow worldview only serve to fuel the fans’ disdain for her.

10. Subaru Natsuki (Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World)

While Re:Zero is beloved by many, Subaru’s often irrational decisions and frequent bouts of self-pity have made him a polarizing figure. Despite being the main protagonist, his tendency to act without thinking and his sometimes creepy obsession with Emilia have frustrated a segment of the fanbase.

Honorable Mentions:

Rachel (Tower of God) – Betrayal of Bam earned her universal hate.

Mello (Death Note) – His impulsive, chaotic actions made him less favorable than Light or Near.

These characters prove that it’s not always about being a villain to be hated in the anime world. Sometimes, a protagonist or supporting character can rub fans the wrong way and become some of the most hated figures in anime history.
